Spousal Support in Denver

A spousal support lawyer in Denver at Modern Family Law handles every part of spousal maintenance, whether you may pay it or receive it. We'll help you understand what to expect, build a plan and enforce court orders when the other side doesn't follow them. Denver cases are heard at Denver District Court in the City and County Building, and your first consultation is free. If you're having a hard time, we want to help.

Spousal maintenance (often called alimony) is one of the most important financial parts of a divorce. It's money one spouse pays the other, set by agreement or court order, to help with the transition after separation. In Denver, where many incomes include bonuses, commissions or self-employment earnings, understanding support early helps you build a plan that works.

Whether you want a second opinion or just more information, call us today. Our Denver family law attorneys will be happy to answer your questions during your free consultation.

How Long Does Spousal Support Last in Denver?

Colorado's guideline ties the length to the length of the marriage. A 36-month marriage points to 11 months of payments, and a 10-year marriage points to 54 months. From 12.5 years on, the term is half the length of the marriage, reaching 120 months for a 20-year marriage. For longer marriages, the court has more discretion. Maintenance generally ends when either spouse dies or the receiving spouse remarries, unless you agreed otherwise in writing. In 2026, the Colorado Supreme Court agreed to review how clearly that agreement must be stated, so careful wording matters.

How Can You Enforce Support Payments?

If the other parent or your former spouse doesn't pay court-ordered support, you have options. You can ask the Denver court to enforce the order, and Denver Human Services' child support services office can help collect child support. Common enforcement tools include wage withholding, intercepting tax refunds, liens on property, suspending a driver's or professional license, and contempt of court. Keep a clear record of every payment, because it makes enforcement much easier.
