Biography


Michael Peterson is the senior attorney in the Fort Collins CO office of Modern Family Law.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in 1974 and his law degree from Louisiana State University School of Law in 1977.  He has been licensed to practice law in Colorado since 1978.  His practice has been exclusively family law for over 30 years.  He is a member of the Colorado State Bar Association and the Larimer County Bar Association.  His practice is generally limited to Larimer County and Weld County Colorado. Mr. Peterson joined Modern Family Law in 2021.

Mr. Peterson’s practice includes:

  • Dissolution of marriage (“divorce”);
  • Decision making (“custody”);
  • Parenting time (“visitation”);
  • Allocation of parental responsibilities (“paternity”);
  • Child support;
  • Relocation of parents and the effects of relocation on existing parenting time; and Protective Orders.

Mr. Peterson was a member of the original Board of Directors of both CASA and Harmony House, agencies created for the purpose of providing a safe environment to facilitate visitation between children and their parents when such contact had been restricted by the Court and would otherwise have been difficult or impossible to accomplish.  Mr. Peterson also served as a Guardian Ad Litem appointed by the Court in certain cases to be the voice of the child in a court case.  Throughout his career, Mr. Peterson’s focus has always been the protection of children and to effectively represent their best interests.
